Flowering dogwoods (Cornus kousa var. chinensis) are naturally broad-growing trees  with a layered growth habit; their slender branches initially ascending then horizontal and wide-spreading. They make arresting plants at any time of year, especially when multi-stemmed as they also develop superb bark which peels off in irregular patches leaving a pattern in shades of grey and cream – we think rather like army camouflague.

Cornus kousa var. chinensis, also known as Chinese dogwood, blooms in late spring to early summer, showcasing exquisite white or pink flowers. Thriving in well-drained, acidic soil and partial shade, it adapts well to small gardens.
